SMKC - “DESERT STRINGS 2008” - WINS THE HEARTS OF ONE AND ALL. - SMKC -Presents dazzling 'Desert Strings'
The much awaited show, “DESERT STRINGS 2008”, a ‘dine n dance’ musical evening kick-started on Thursday, October 16 at the Al Rashidiya Ballroom, Al Bustan Rotana Hotel, Dubai. It was a day to remember to unite all the Konkani speaking community spread all over the Emirates under one umbrella with the theme “Sprinkles of Warmth & Bliss”. At this occasion St. Mary’s Konkan Community (SMKC) commemorated their 7th Anniversary, having completed seven fruitful years of selfless service to the community.
The doors were open at with the DJ, playing some soft music. The show commenced at with the young and dynamic host of the evening Mr. Wendyl D’Souza, welcoming one and all, and then inviting Fr. Freddy, the spiritual director of SMKC to lead the opening prayer.
Fr, Freddy D’souza led a short prayer thanking the Almighty for His showers of blessings and thanked all the benevolent Sponsors, who made the show possible by their generous participation. God blesses the cheerful giver and hence he thanked all those who contributed to help the poorest of the poor.
Mr. Boniface Carlo (Main Coordinator of SMKC) welcomed the gathering and read a brief report highlighting the purpose behind this annual charity program. He alsoannounced that the proceeds collected over the 7 annual fund raising events, was contributed towards the needy back home in Mangalore since Oct 2001. Funds were distributed to educate many students for higher education in the field of Engineering, medicine and other vocational courses – Currently stands at 60 students. The funds were also distributed to homeless to build homes, widows, orphans and sick people. He specially thanked all the Sponsors for their continued support.
Fr. Freddy D’souza then officially declared the gala evening program “Desert Strings 2008” open.
Mr. Wendyl D’souza then introduced co-host of the evening, Ms. MalavikaVaradhan of Arabian Network Radio, and both of them anchored the entire show with their unique style
The famous band from Mumbai, the “FLYPSIDE”, - 7 team members, specially flown in for the show – led by Schubert, then took the centre stage with the first Konkani song dedicated to all sponsors “Mogan Aso Borem”, followed by Kitlo Kuscheso Dees, Claudia and other popular Konkani songs. They slowly switched over to English numbers and played some lovely slow and rock n roll numbers that brought the crowd to dancing floor.
Immediately after the first 45 minutes session, the felicitation of Sponsors, Co-sponsors and Benefactors was conducted with grand decorum as the core committee members escorted all the dignitaries to the stage to receive their mementoes.
The comperes gave away a lot of spot prizes and novelty prizes to all participants and winners on “Entry Ticket Lucky Draw”. Some of the lucky winners carried home lovely prizes that included air tickets and other electronic items who, stayed behind enjoying till and beyond.
The bubbly & attractive, Malavika was in her tilting musical voice compering along with Wendyl D’souza.
“Flypside” played Non stop baila in the last session that brought the entire audience on the floor. At the end, the seating looked empty but the dancing floor was full with couples. Both Wendyl and Malavika played their roles well and gave a befitting conclusion to their anchorship as they ended the show at around 3

SMKC -Presents dazzling 'Desert Strings'

Dubai October 17, 2008: St. Mary's Konkan Community (SMKC) Dubai organized a vibrant and exhilarating fund raising musical event "Desert Strings" at the Al Rashidiya Ballroom - Al Bustan Rotana, Dubai on Thursday, October 16, 2008. The Konkani speaking community spread all over the United Arab Emirates gathered as one big family to have an evening of fun and entertainment. The Ballroom was packed with more than 1000 people witnessing this event.
The doors were open at 7.30 p.m with the DJ Wendyl D'Souza, playing some of his choicest selection of songs (soft numbers). The event commenced at 9.30 p.m sharp as decided by the SMKC core committee members. Mr. Wendyl D'Souza' , the spirited and endearing MC, made an impact with his deep and sonorous voice. He requested Rev. Fr. Freddy D'souza - the spiritual Director of SMKC to invoke the blessings of Almighty. Fr. Freddy led a short prayer thanking the Almighty for His countless blessings and thanked all the benevolent Sponsors, who made the event possible with their generous contribution and participation. God gives a cheerful giver and he thanked them for helping the helpless.

He said that he had no words to express his happiness, and expressed his heartfelt gratitude to all the sponsors and well wishers who helped them financially. He praised Fr. Freddy for being instrumental and without his blessings this event would not have been possible He then welcomed Fr. Freddy and Fr. Denis Fernandes (a visitor from Japan) to come on stage. SMKC strives hard to help 60 needy students back home to pursue their education in various fields. They have also adopted 10 parishes of Mangalore for the students to be educated in different fields, he added.
Mr. Wendyl D'Souza' , introduced and invited the young and charming Malavika Varadhan ( RJ Arabian Radio Network - ARN city 101.6 ) , co-hostess for the evening, who made an impact on the gathering with her smooth and confident stride. The famous band from Bombay (Mumbai), the "FLYPSIDE" - with 7 team members - Shubert (Band leader and vocalist), Cyril (saxophone), Desmond(Bass vocalists), Rohan (Guitar), Ivan (Drums), Amon (lead guitar) and Loretta (female vocalist) then took on the stage.
The "sponsors special" first song "Mogan Aso Borem" was dedicated to all Sponsors and the crowd. This was followed by a 45 minutes session with songs like Claudia, Sooryacha kirnani, I love you more than I can say, and I just called to say I love you. Immediately after the first 45 minutes session, the felicitation of all the sponsors, Co Sponsors, Benefactors and well wishers was conducted with grand decorum. The core committee members escorted all the dignitaries to the stage to receive their mementoes from Fr. Freddy.
SMKC Dubai's organizational skills depicted in the well mannered audience, who were very much glued to their seats and were enjoying the event to the fullest. Sumptuous buffet dinner was served at 11.30 PM.
The whole program was divided into five musical sessions. The first session was filled with slow sentimental and love songs and the band "FLYPSIDE" took the crowd down the memory lane leading to fast songs consisting of rock and roll, and swinging numbers that kept the crowd on the dance floor.
The comperes gave away a lot of spot prizes and Novelty prizes to all the participants and winners. Some of the lucky winners carried home good prizes that included air tickets and other electronic items. The FLYPSIDE were simply fantastic and won the hearts of all audience, as they played one after another lovely numbers like I'll survive, Pretty woman, Oh Sera, Rolling on the Limestone, Blue berry hill, more than I can say, When you were smiling, Funny Feeling, Sunshine of my life, just to name a few.

The local Goan artists from 'The Raphael Group' performed rib-tickling comedy song "Hanv Bombeiychi Aaya" that enhanced the buoyant spirit of this gala evening. In view of getting charity fund raised, the auction of some of the novelty items were conducted.
This followed by Hollwood/bollywood numbers that kept the entire crowd on their toes. The entire event concluded with Baila numbers. Prior to concluding the event the SMKC committee members sang Happy B'Day song on the occasion of Fr. Freddy's Birthday.
Right from the stage settings to the seating arrangements, SMKC members worked hard to see the success of this event. Jude, Ivan, Norbert, Prakash, Sydney, Jerina, Vijay honorary supporters of SMKC Dubai, took charge of stage management as well as program coordination. They are indeed to be saluted along with the other core committee members and volunteers who worked tirelessly over the past few months to put up such an exuberant event.
As in the past, SMKC Dubai thrived to produce a glamorous event with a lot of difference and style so that cosmopolitan crowd could also go home satisfied and fully entertained. Again it was an innovative and dazzling event - a SMKC venture - that never fails.
